New guide: how platforms turn payment data into a capital programRead it →

Meet Federico Molina, our Founding Risk Partner

The person who decides what we are willing to be wrong about, and how much. Every model we ship has been argued with by Fede first.

Slate··1 min read

Slate carries the credit risk on every advance our partners offer. That sentence is easy to write on a website and expensive to mean. Fede is the person who makes sure we mean it.

He owns underwriting: how customers are scored, how limits are set, what data actually predicts repayment in a given vertical, and where the model should refuse to have an opinion and ask a human instead.

The part outsiders find surprising

Most of his job is not saying no. It is finding the businesses a traditional lender would decline for the wrong reason, and being able to show why the platform's own data says otherwise. A seasonal clinic and a failing clinic look identical on a bank statement. They do not look identical on a booking calendar.

He is also the reason our scoring varies by product and never by partner. That is a line he holds, because the alternative is a program that quietly prices some platforms' customers worse than others.

What he brings to a room

A very high tolerance for being asked "but why" four times in a row, and a much lower tolerance for a number nobody can explain.
